Class Schedule

In my classes and workshops, I try to help my students realize that there is an artist within themselves just waiting to express itself. I will share with you all the basic techniques of watercolor. But, it is my hope in sharing with you my love of watercolor, that you will go beyond the basics of technique and experience many hours of unlimited creativity. In my classes I have noticed that many of the same lessons that apply to art also apply to life. It is because of this that I believe we are all artists creating the greatest masterpiece of all, life.

5-DAY WATERCOLOR GETAWAY IN PHOENIX
Monday, February 20 through Friday, February 24, 10-4 each Day
Workshop held at the home of Janet Myrick in Sun Lakes, AZ (just South of Phoenix)
Cost:  $50 per day, or $235 if you take all 5 days.

In this workshop we will paint a wide variety of subjects with lots of demonstrations and individual help. Color, composition and value will be covered as well as lots of little tricks that are unique to watercolor.  This workshop is designed for painters with some experience, not the absolute beginner.

Day 1 - Let's experiment with the color red while we paint oriental poppies.  we will wet just one petal at a time, letting cadmium scarlet, winsor red, alizarin crimson and perylene violet mix on the paper to create some exciting color mixes.  Composition, design and color mixing will be the emphasis for the day.

Day 2 - Today we will work in the wet-in-wet style while we paint water lilies.  Learn to create that softness that we all love about watercolor using lost-and-found edges and negative painting.  As a fun design element, you may want to add a border around the edge of the painting.  Learn how to create a focal point in your painting and lead the viewer's eye with composition.

Day 3 – Again using the wet-in-wet approach, we will learn how to create "crawl backs or blossoms" to form the ruffly edges of white petunias.  Learn more about negative painting, layering to create depth in your painting and lots of little tricks and techniques that are unique to watercolor.

Day 4 – Today you will build on the skills learned over the past two days to create a forest scene with rays of sunlight filtering through trees with some wildflowers in the foreground.  Use of masking fluid and stencils will be covered today as well.

Day 5 - For our last day, students will really loosen up as they use plastic wrap, gauze and rice paper to create an abstract landscape with water cascading over rocks.  These techniques will help you create some exciting textures and patterns of light and dark in your painting.  some collage will be incorporated.  A $2.00 supply fee will be payable to instructor.  Be sure to bring an old bath towel, scissors and a hair dryer.  we will work big and everyone will go home with a finished painting at the end of the day.

Each student must have their own supplies.  Ask for a materials list.  Also, each student should bring a bag lunch to keep the break to a minimum.  To register or if you have questions, call Jan Foss at 775-833-1144.

PRIVATE LESSONS
If none of the above workshops will work for you, I also give private lessons in my studio at the rate of $30 per hour.  You learn very quickly working one-on-one and we can usually accomplish as much in two hours as you would in an all day workshop.  Of course, you don't finish a painting in that length of time, but I will suggest things to do at home to finish up your painting.  Private lessons are also great if you need help finishing up a particular project or want some critique on several projects.
